Why NSF Certification?
Rentricity and the Cornell Pump Company (Cornell) have worked together since 2012 to provide the highest level of safety certification for its hydro-turbine product line (link to press release). This exclusive partnership makes Rentricity the global sole-source provider of NSF 61/372 Pump-as-Turbines (PAT) for In-Conduit Hydropower manufactured in the United States by the Cornell Pump Company.
The National Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) prohibits the use of any in-pipe device that is not lead free (less than 8 percent lead). Congress amended the SDWA in 1996 requiring that water-facing components meet lead-leaching performance standards of the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). NSF/ANSI Standard 61 has since been adopted by 49 states and Canada.
The Water Quality Association recognition marks an important milestone for Rentricity and Cornell , both committed to assuring safety and quality for Owner/Client who apply our clean energy recovery in-conduit hydropower solutions. The NSF/ANSI standard was awarded following stringent and extensive qualification of requirements for the control of potential human health effects from products that contact consumable drinking water, food & beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.

The Rentricity Flow-to-Wire Turbine NSF/ANSI 61 & 372 Certification includes the following:
- Confirms compliance with individual state drinking water requirements as well as those of the 2014 Amendment of the U.S. Federal Safe Water Drinking Act.
- NSF/ANSI 372 certifies that each product has a weighted average lead content of 0.25% or less.
- Cornell Pump’s manufacturing facility in Clackamas, OR has been successfully audited and certified by the Water Quality Association.
- Selected materials approved by NSF/ANSI 61 & 372 Certification
- 45 States & 8 Provinces require certification with 5 states requiring compliance
NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 - 2021
Drinking Water System Components – establishes the minimum health effects requirements for the chemical contaminants and impurities that are indirectly imparted to drinking water from products, components, and materials used in drinking water systems.
This Standard does not establish performance, taste and odor, or microbial growth support requirements for drinking water systems products, components, or materials. Drinking Water Treatment Products certified to NSF/ANSI 61 have not been tested or evaluated for contaminant reduction performance. Contaminant reduction testing and certification claims shall be evaluated via the industry’s residential drinking water treatment standards.
NSF/ANSI/CAN 372
This establishes a standardized methodology for the determination and verification of product compliance with a maximum weighted average lead content requirement of 0.25%. With the exception of those products exempted in the Safe Drinking Water Act of the United States, all products certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 must also be evaluated to the requirements of NSF/ANSI/CAN 372.
On September 1, 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the final regulation “Use of Lead Free Pipes, Fittings, Fixtures, Solder, and Flux for Drinking Water,” which requires that manufacturers or importers certify that their products meet a 0.25% weighted average lead content for products conveying or dispensing drinking water.

Twenty-two (22) units have been certified by the Water Quality Association to the NSF safe drinking water and low lead standard. Another 16 are in various stages of review and can be certified in an expedited fashion.
