What is a Flow-to-Wire?

As gravity-fed water continuously flows through pipelines for various applications, such as drinking water, it offers the capability to generate electricity year-round, 24 hours per day. Excess pressure occurs where water is stored at significantly higher elevations or delivered at higher pressures than the customers it serves.

Cities, investor owned water utilities, irrigation and industrial operations typically install pressure reduction valves (PRVs – hydraulic devices that maintain pre-set downstream pressure) or flow control valves to bring pressure into balance for localized operational purposes.  Drinking water operators and industrial manufacturers also maintain pressure reduction vaults to relieve the excess pressure for specific processes. PRVs generally do not perform useful work with the dissipated pressure, and simply release it as waste heat. Rentricity’s Flow-to-Wire (F2W) energy recovery systems convert this excess pressure into clean electricity while maintaining the flow and pressures required for a respective water operation.

Rentricity has steadily grown an extensive portfolio of projects; 26 commercial installations as of 2023 across the US and Canada. These projects range from 5 – 360 kW with five projects including multiple, different sized F2W turbines. Rentricity strength is in the hydraulic design and optimization to  provide the greatest value that will customize your water infrastructure and maximize net annual clean power generation and return on your investment.

The first step in the F2W Turbine selection is to fully understand the historical flow/pressure profile and any future trends that may change this record.

A hydraulic profile is created and mapped in one or more of several possible forms for annual periods such as:

  1. Flow Duration Curve for varying flow with fixed pressure and;
  2. Exceedance profiles that map the typical flow for varying pressures. Bar charts or curves provide individual and cumulative percent of time those hydraulics conditions exist over an annual cycle.

F2W selection becomes relatively straight forward for sites with fixed pressure.  However, maximizing energy recovered under the flow duration curve becomes more complex with varying hydraulics due in part to diurnal or seasonal characteristics of most sites. Typical pumps as turbines are constrained to operating at a single point along the system resistance curve, however, F2W’s can better match up the turbine output and allow it to operate over a significant portion of its head/flow curve. This can be done efficiently and reliably with Rentricity’s SEMS control system for optimal clean energy output.

For sites with a wide range of hydraulics; e.g. flows operating over several or more multiples and heads varying (30-50%), multiple, different sized F2W turbines may be the best solution.  Rentricity’s analytical tools allow our team to help our clients zero in on the best turbine(s) and SEMS packages that can maximize total annual net generation (kWh) and best return on investment.  You can Select a F2W turbine below.
