About Rentricity

Conceived in 2001 after the 9/11 Attacks, Rentricity is the Premier provider of In-conduit Hydropower equipment & engineering solutions in North America.

What We Do

Rentricity Inc. is a clean energy company based in New York City. Solely focused on In-Conduit HydroPower in existing and new water infrastructure, Rentricity designs and installs its energy recovery system, Flow-to-Wire™.

The system harnesses excess pressure within water operations and uses it to generate clean electric power. A single Flow-to-Wire™ system produces between 5 and 350 kW of clean, renewable, electricity that can then be sold back to the grid or be used on site at water treatment plants, processing facilities and pump stations.

We provide our customers with a new source of revenue, a way to offset rising electricity rates, and reliable, clean electricity to meet sustainability demands.

Rentricity provides a full suite of equipment and services. This includes mechanical, electrical and civil engineering design, exclusive NSF-certified pump-as-turbine (PAT) equipment, control valves, program logic controls, switchgear, construction management, permitting and start-up and training support.

Rentricity’s Flow-to-Wire™ includes, a suite of control & switchgear NEMA 4 enclosures called the Sustainable Energy & Monitoring System SEMS™. SEMS is equipped with UL508A certified panels, utility grade multi-function relay, and a fully adaptive SCADA interface with on-Board PLC for management of multiple turbines/valve combinations to manage and respond to multiple, independent demands for downstream water.

Rentricity’s versatile control schemes and software provides the ability to optimize power output for a variety of hydraulic conditions (flow/pressure combinations) while providing flow and pressure control downstream.

Our Mission

Harvesting Clean, Renewable Energy from Pressurized Solid Water Pipe Infrastructure

The concept behind Rentricity’s technology was born after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Co-Founders Frank Zammataro, Al Spinell, and Jason Scharfspitz were inspired to create a business to gather energy from flowing water in New York City pipes. Rentricity has been leading the way in combining the best technologies for in-conduit hydropower, improving the resiliency of water infrastructure systems across North America.

With over 400 billion gallons of water flowing through pipes every day in the United States, the timing is right for considering new ways to deliver water in a smart and sustainable way. Rentricity focuses on drinking, agricultural, and industrial water applications, which accounts for over 200 billion gallons daily and over 25% of domestic energy consumption. Whether being processed for household consumption, yogurt production, or poultry processing, water is in constant demand.

The transportation, treatment, and use of this water requires huge amounts of energy, a large portion of which is being wasted through inefficient pipes and valves. One thing is clear: providing pressurized and clean water requires substantial amounts of energy. This condition creates a unique potential for new and novel approaches to take advantage of energy in flowing water while reducing the carbon footprint of municipal, agricultural, and industrial water operations.

As water pipelines continue to age, needing replacement, Rentricity’s in-conduit hydropower energy recovery systems are ready to meet the need, leading the way towards improving water operation energy efficiency and sustainability.

Rentricity systems support key sustainability and community objectives by:

  • Creating a new revenue source to offset rising electricity rates;
  • Improving the operational use of water by powering up remote treatment, monitoring  and new modular hydrogen technology;
  • Powering back-up energy storage systems for improved resiliency against power failures;
  • Offsetting toxic air emissions in the communities in which they operate;
  • Integrating new technologies while satisfying the need for environmental stewardship;
  • Upgrading the “green” skills of operational staff and supporting service suppliers;
  • Achieving Sustainability Goals for investors and communities.

Rentricity will continue to bring in-conduit hydropower equipment and services to water operators, pioneering sustainable “water grids” for the future.

Our Principles

Rentricity systems have no adverse environmental impact and will be a driving force behind hundreds of megawatts of clean electricity created by In-conduit water flow and pressure – leading the way towards a smart and sustainable water grid.

The Sole-Source Rentricity NSF-Edge: Certified Flow-to-Wire Pump-as-Turbine Systems

Rentricity and the Cornell Pump Company (Cornell) have worked together since 2012 to provide the highest level of safety certification for its hydro-turbine product line (link to press release). This exclusive partnership established Rentricity as the global sole-source provider of NSF 61/372 Pump-as-Turbines (PAT) for In-Conduit Hydropower application manufactured in the United States by the Cornell Pump Company. The National Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) prohibits the use of any in-pipe device that is not lead free (less than 8 percent lead). Congress amended the SDWA in 1996 requiring that water-facing components meet lead-leaching performance standards of the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). NSF/ANSI Standard 61 has since been adopted by 49 states and Canada.

Water Quality Association Gold Seal

The Water Quality Association certification and recognition marks an important milestone for Rentricity and Cornell , both committed to assuring safety and quality for Owner/Client who apply our clean energy recovery in-conduit hydropower  solutions. The NSF/ANSI standard was awarded following stringent and extensive qualification of requirements for the control of potential human health effects from products that contact consumable drinking water, food & beverage and pharmaceutical applications.

History

Rentricity Inc. was established in 2003 and conceived by its Founders following the 9/11 attacks in New York City.  Following start-up grants from Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York, the Company was  incubated at New York University’s Urban Future Lab (formally known as ACRE), winning the 2012 US CleanTech Open National Renewable Energy Award and commencing commercial operations in 2012.
